Students To Show And Interact At Scripps Science “Cell”ebration At The Gardens Mall

Posted by: Vickie Middlebrooks

Scripps is hosting a science cellebration day at The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens on Saturday, February 6 from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm.  There will be six interactive exhibits, a DNA discovery walk, and displays on the important scientific research conducted at Scripps Florida.  In addition, selected students will show their winning science fair projects – each of these students will receive an official Scripps Florida lab coat.  During the exhibit, visitors will have a chance to compete for prizes by completing the Scripps Florida science quiz – with answers they can gather from each of the activity booths.

“As the state of Florida becomes a hub for the biotech industry, it is vital that our students and their families understand the impact of biotechnology on maintaining and improving quality of life,” said School District K-12 Science Manager Wendy Spielman.  “The Scripps Science Cellebration at The Gardens Mall will make the science of biotechnology accessible to our students and the community in a fun, interactive way.  It may also open students’ eyes to a variety of careers paths and fields of study that they may have never considered before.  It will be an outstanding event.”

Interactive Booths at Scripps Science Cellebration

  • “Express Yourself”: Ever wondered how DNA and your genes determine how you look and feel? Scripps scientists demonstrate the genetics of taste to see who can taste bitter, sweet, and savory… it’s all in the genes!
  • “Go F.I.S.H.”: How does science see the invisible? Scientists can highlight parts of chromosomes by chemically inserting molecules that glow. Discover the “genetic recipe” for making bright fluorescent red, green, and orange zebra fish.
  • “A-MAZE-ing Proteins”: Proteins build, regulate and maintain your body… plus they have interesting curling, twisting shapes! Walk through the protein maze, and talk with Scripps scientists who use this advanced technology.
  • “ScrippsBot”: What happens when you combine a Wii with a Scripps robot?  Scripps scientists lead fun robotics activities that illustrate the use of technology in the research lab.
  • “Synthesize”: Atoms, molecules and chemicals, oh my!  Scripps Florida chemists will change aspirin into wintergreen, demonstrate eye-popping color-change reactions, and do truly “cool” things with liquid nitrogen.
  • “Energize”: Chemistry really pops when Scripps Florida chemists explore alternative fuels. Try your hand at working in an actual laboratory glove box, then see (and hear) what happens when hydrogen and oxygen meet a catalyst.
