Barton Elementary Set to Present Contributions from A Dollar for Haiti Project

Posted by: Deborah Stewart

Missionary Flights International to Receive Nearly $5,000!

When Barton Elementary Principal Dr. Aurora Francois and her friend, Reginale Durandisse, CEO of For The Children, Inc. collaborated to bring  the district-wide A Dollar for Haiti Project to life, they wanted a way that students and families in our schools and communities could give even just one dollar—but know that money would go to help with Haiti relief efforts!

On Thursday, March 11, at 11:00  a.m., a representative from Missionary Flights International, a non-profit organization that has made countless flights to Haiti since the January earthquake that rocked the island nation, will be at the school to receive an official “big check” (compliments of Wachovia Bank).  The official presentation of the $4,887.11 check will involve students and staff at the Lake Worth Elementary school—where even students who have very little themselves—have been proud to offer their money for the project.

“One of our first graders, Jose—sacrificed his $1.00 cookie money to donate to the project,” said Dr. Francois. “And we just registered a new student—who’s homeless…but who had managed to save $2.00 to give to those in need….it was very important to her that her money counted,” added the District’s only Haitian-born principal of a public school.

Superintendent Dr. Art Johnson says he’s not surprised by the efforts of the Barton Elementary School family.  “Barton Elementary School has  long been known for its caring and compassion…they have already enrolled nine student survivors of the earthquake in Haiti,” he stated. “This contribution to the Missionary Flights effort is one gratifying way district students, staff and community allies have collaborated to make a positive difference for our neighbors in the Caribbean,” he added.
