Renowned Choreographer/Dancer Allows Dreyfoos Use of “Harbinger”

Posted by: Deborah Stewart

Elliot Feld Allows Dance Department to Use His Premiere Work

“Harbinger”, Eliot Feld’s first ballet, had its world premiere by the American Ballet Theater at Miami’s Dade County Auditorium  in 196.  After the New York premiere, Clive Barnes, then the dance critic for the New York Times, proclaimed “Gentlemen, a genius!” in the first line of the review, thus launching a prolific and enigmatic career for Mr. Feld that has spanned over four decades.

The Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts dance department will begin its spring concert by presenting the first movement of “Harbinger” in Meyer Hall from April 8-11,  marking the first time the ballet has been performed outside of the American Ballet Theatre or Mr. Feld’s own dance companies.  Other sections of the ballet will be presented during next season’s dance concerts.

Dreyfoos ballet teacher Jeff Satinoff will be staging the work. “It’s a real honor that Eliot has given us the opportunity to work on a ballet that is so close to me and so important to American ballet,” says Mr. Satinoff, a principal dancer with the Feld Ballet for ten years from its start in 1974.  Working closely with Mr. Feld, and performing the first movement’s male solo over the ten years that he was a member of the company, Satinoff brings a deep understanding of the Feld repertory to the ballet.  “The first movement of “Harbinger” was my first important role with the Feld Company”, noted Satinoff.  “It is the beginning of Eliot’s vision and it was very compelling to me.  It will be a special pleasure for me to re-stage.”

Also featured at April’s concert will be works by Margo Sappington, a Lifetime Achievement Award winner from the Joffrey Ballet and guest artist at the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts; alum Billy Bell (class of 2008) and contestant on Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance; Jan Hanniford Goetz, dean of dance at Dreyfoos; and, Ronda Johnson, modern dance teacher at Dreyfoos.
