Boynton High Students And Faculty Partner With Galaxy And Poinciana Elementary Schools

Posted by: Bito David

On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, Boynton Beach Community High faculty and students welcomed fifth grade students from Galaxy and Poinciana elementary schools for a “View of High School.”  The fifth graders earned the trip by scoring a 4 or higher on their Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) Writes last spring.

As the students exited the school bus, they were greeted by Miss Blake Bennett, Assistant Principal, who escorted the young students to the Black Box Theater; where they were treated to performances by the BBCHS Performing Arts students.  Leon Cobb, BBCHS student who spent the summer in NYC at Alvin Ailey Dance School performed for the students.  In addition, boys from the Dance Academy performed, as did the members of  Dimensional Harmony.  The highlight of the program was when BBCHS Drama students showed the fifth graders an improvisation technique called “Park Bench”.

After the viewing the technique, the fifth graders were able to practice their own improvisation skills based on what they’ve learned. Following the program in the Black Box, students took a tour of the Boynton Aerospace Science Academy.  Finally, the fifth graders were treated to a delicious lunch prepared and served by the Culinary Academy students.

During lunch, two of the BBCHS Tiger Football team members addressed the students and gave them some great advice.  One of them, Jonathan Harris, told the students, “Listen to your parents and teachers, because they are the ones who can help you be successful. Remember to do your homework, because it’s like practice for class.”

The fifth graders had several interesting comments regarding the trip.   Cayla Severin, fifth grader at Galaxy said, “I like the Park Bench Drama.”  Angeline Louisdort, age 12 from Poinciana said, “I liked the airplanes. We got to look at the parts of an airplane and see the airplanes they were building.” All of the students would agree with Mackenzie Snyder who said – “I’m so sad we had to leave, I enjoyed the food!”
