Posted by: Vickie Middlebrooks

Beth Bobay, a mathematics teacher at Suncoast Community High School is the recipient of the 2011 Yale Educator Award. The Yale Educator Recognition Program recognizes outstanding educators from around the world who have supported and inspired their students to achieve at high levels. Matriculating students are invited to nominate high school educators, and a committee composed of Yale admissions officers reviews the nominations individually and designates recipients. Of 228 nominations received for this year’s Educator Award 50 teachers and 30 counselors were selected to receive the awards.

Ms. Bobay is beginning her 30th year of teaching and her 7th year at Suncoast Community High School.  In the 2008-09 school year, she received the prestigious national Siemens Award for the State of Florida for her students’ superior achievement in Advanced Placement Calculus and she also received her National Board Teaching Certification.  At Suncoast, Ms. Bobay sponsors Mu Alpha Theta which is the National Math Honor Society.  This club actively participates in state and regional math competitions throughout the school year.   With the help of her Suncoast colleagues, the team has received many trophies and accolades including a state winner in the Florida Math League competition.  The team also serves the community by tutoring mathematics at all levels.
