Reading Strategies Workshop Offered by Veteran Teacher/Author
Popular Conniston Middle School Teacher Tom Tufts is offering a Reading and Writing Workshop packed with lots of useful information and newspaper activities, highlighted by a special prize drawing. Geared to 3-10 grade teachers, the session also introduces the sequel to his book, The Night Before Middle School, titled The Dynamite Days of Middle School. The veteran teacher and author of children’s poems and short stories invites teachers to travel with characters Jay and Laz as they cross Florida’s Tamiami Trail in search of Susie in Fort Myers. During this trip the characters learn all about the Everglades, its diverse ecosystem, and the factors that created the need for restoration.
Sponsored by the Sun Sentinel Newspapers in Education program, the workshop participants will receive Mr. Tufts’ new vocabulary building and Everglades trivia board game as well a copy of the novel at no cost. All participants will learn to combine sentences using excerpts from his Awesome Sentence Combining textook which has proven to greatly improve students’ writing.
The workshop is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Sun Sentinel Auditorium, 3333 SW 12th Avenue in Deerfield Beach. The registration deadline is May 7.
