Freshmen Get “Jumpstart” On Rigorous Mathematical Curriculum
More than 70 incoming Suncoast High School Math, Science, and Engineering (MSE) freshmen enthusiastically arrived during their summer vacation for the first of an eight-day preparatory program designed to solidify their mathematical foundation. Approximately 100 students were invited to attend Suncoast’s first of its kind jumpstart program to ensure mastery of the core Algebra II concepts that will comprise the foundational skills for success in higher level math courses prior to their beginning their mathematical journey at Suncoast. The MSE Program boasts one of the most rigorous math tracks of any high school program in the country. Junior and senior level MSE students take six dual enrollment courses for college credit.
Out of a determination to be proactive and set MSE students up for success, the Pre-Calculus Jumpstart Program was born. Suncoast’s PTSA generously provided funding and three Suncoast Math teachers wrote the curriculum and volunteered to return to the classroom two weeks early to teach it.
