Elementary Speech-Language Pathologist Featured in National Publication
Brian Zimmerman, Speech-language pathologist and KEC TV News Director at Kathryn E. Cunningham/Canal Point Elementary is being featured in the latest edition of the ASHA Leader, a monthly publication for the American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA).
Mr. Zimmerman is being recognized for his efforts and for giving a new image to the school. Since he began at KEC/Canal Point Elementary students have been able to interview performers, sports players, work on the red carpet at an awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
Perhaps, most impressive is one of his students, Damon Weaver, was invited to the White House to interview President Barack Obama.
“A lot of these kids don’t get to go to a lot of places,” Zimmerman explained. “And with these videos or with any of my assignments, I get to be the one who introduces them to these new experiences.”
This year Zimmerman’s student’s created a public service announcement about noise-induced hearing loss that placed first (in the age 8–10 category) in ASHA’s “Listen to Your Buds” video contest.

Zimmerman said, “Since I am first and foremost a speech-language pathologist it is a great honor to be recognized by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. I hope that this article brings awareness to the fact that the faculty in public schools often take on tasks that are way beyond their job description.”
Mr. Zimmerman is a true inspiration and hopes to continue improving his student’s speech and language skills, confidence, self-esteem and ability to follow directions through this exceptional news club.
