The School District of Palm Beach County announced that Lee Kolbert, Manager of the Department of Educational Technology, has been nominated for honors in the category of School Technologists at the 2013 Annual Bammy Awards. Presented by the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences International, the Bammy award is a cross-discipline award recognizing the contributions of educators from across the education field.

Mrs. Kolbert has been an educator in the Palm Beach County School District for almost 29 years. She enjoys learning, sharing, and blogging and publishes her thoughts at www.leekolbert.com, as well as at The Huffington Post. Lee says, “It’s fantastic to see educators getting recognition for the hard work they do on a daily basis. I’m humbled by this nomination since there are so many other educators who have made a much greater impact than I.”

She is passionate about social media and the benefits of its use for networking and professional growth. Lee credits the members of the Educational Technology team for being “the wind beneath her wings.”

“I hope this is the beginning of a shift in our society where we will see more efforts to recognize the loyalty, hard work, and patience that makes up most of our teachers,” she adds.

Honorees will be announced on September 21, 2013 at a red-carpet event in Washington, D.C. The Bammy Awards are presented by The Academy of Education Arts and Sciences International, which includes leading educators, education leaders, education professors, journalists, editors, researchers, commentators, advocates, activists, visionaries and pioneers. The Academy is comprised of a board of governors, a council of peers and the executive committee.

“Nominees like Mrs. Kolbert are making a difference in education every day. It’s more important now that ever to publicly honor educators and to show what’s right with American Education,” said Errol St. Clair Smith, executive producer of the Bammy Awards.

About the Bammy Awards

The Bammy Awards is a cross-discipline award that identifies and acknowledges the good work being done all across the education village. The Bammy Awards were created in response to the tremendous national pressure on educators and education leaders to improve student outcomes, the impact of high-stakes accountability and the intense scrutiny that today’s educator’s face.

The Awards aim to foster cross-discipline recognition of the collective contributions being made to educate children, encourage collaboration in and across the various domains, elevate education and education successes in the public eye, and raise the profile and voices of the many undervalued and unrecognized people who are making a difference in the field.

Stephen Anand, science instructor at the Arts school is ecstatic! “Chris’s entry was Modeling Estuarine Salinity Using Artificial Neural Networks and his win has put Dreyfoos on the map at the international level,” he stated.

Christopher Wan, age 17, from Wellington, has been working on similar projects modeling salinity for two years. He was recognized by the Siemens Foundation in their prestigious STEM competition earlier in the year; was named a ‘MAD (Making A Difference) Scientist’ by Junior Achievement at their Watch a Rising Star event at the Kravis Center; and this past May Christopher was unable to attend the prestigious Palm Beach Post Pathfinder Awards where he was named The Pathfinder winner for Science because he was competing in the Intel science fair.

Speaking about the 1st place project Wan submitted, he explains that he put in substantial time and effort into the research. “The first year (11th grade) I spent about 400 hours on my research. This year I continued my research project with an additional 800 hours in the same field of study. The goal was to develop a model to simulate salinity in the Loxahatchee River as a performance tool. My project allows engineers and environmentalists to predict salinity at any given moment in the river. Currently the South Florida Water Management District has three dimensional models to predict this and they require days to run. My model works instantaneously.”

Christopher, a Dreyfoos piano major, graduated number one in his class and will be attending Yale University in the fall with plans to major in biochemistry and music performance. For details, contact Magnet Coordinator Jane Grandusky, 561.805.6203 or jane.grandusky@palmbeachschools.org.

The School District of Palm Beach County has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

According to GFOA, “The award represents a significant achievement by the entity. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation.” These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as:

a policy document

a financial plan

an operations guide

a communications device

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for its having achieved the award. The certificate was presented to Shirley M. Knox, School District Budget Director.

For budgets including fiscal period 2012, over 1,340 entities are expected to receive the Award. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit professional association serving over 17,800 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

For more information please contact Stephen J. Gauthier at (312) 977-9700.

As the Transition Program Planner in the Exceptional Student Education Department, Ms. Neil has helped with the establishment of multiple post-secondary programs for students with cognitive disabilities in Palm Beach County. She diligently worked to create a post-secondary college program at Lynn University and collaborated with Project TEN in writing the Florida Consortium TPSID grant. She has worked with several charter schools to bring the unique programs, such as Project SEARCH to the district and created a Modified Occupational Completion Points program, called CORE (Career Opportunities and Related Education) at a technical charter school. She created off-campus programs throughout the district for special diploma graduates to continue their education in a community environment. These programs called ACCESS (Assimilation to Community, Careers, and Self-Sufficiency) are located in area businesses and government agency facilities. She negotiated contracts with each entity to provide space without fees to the district.

Ms. Neil is also the Chair of the transition council, Council for In-Transition Youth (CITY) Committee. She has inaugurated the Start Transition and Realize Success (STARS) Conference. She has also planned and coordinated the conference for the past eight years. Furthermore, Ms. Neil works with others to replicate successful programs. She was involved in the development of Florida Consortium’s annual Hartwick Symposium. This conference provides opportunities for districts across the state to learn how to create and support post-secondary programs.

Ms. Neil has volunteered for 10 years to serve on the Florida Division on Career Development & Transition (DCDT) Board. She collaborates with others across the state to plan their annual Visions Conference. Ms. Neil also supports other districts in responding and assisting them with the replication of all programs.

The School District of Palm Beach County transportation officials will conduct a Western Area Evacuation Plan Exercise on Friday, June 7, 2013, at 7:00 a.m. This annual exercise is designed to simulate functions associated with evacuation of the western area communities of Palm Beach County in the event of a breach of the Lake Okeechobee Dike.

Transportation officials will utilize approximately 30 buses from the six (6) transportation facilities to participate in this exercise. The buses will be required to travel to assigned pick-up locations in the west area and return to the South Florida Fairgrounds. Also, Movement Control Teams will be strategically staged on State Road 80 to monitor this process.

It is estimated that 18,000 people will depend on public transportation for evacuation. Contingency plans, will allow for much greater numbers of potential evacuees.

The School District has approximately 835 buses, located at six (6) transportation facilities throughout the county. The West Transportation Facility located in Belle Glade, FL has over 50 school buses permanently assigned to the Glades area with seating capacity ranging from 50 to 84 passengers. This facility has an overall carrying capacity of approximately 3,000 passengers. The carrying capacity will be reduced based on personal effects being carried by individuals.

Additional buses from other transportation facilities will augment the evacuation process as required. Drivers and buses from other facilities can be mobilized in approximately one (1) hour and can reach pick-up areas in the Glades area in approximately one additional hour, assuming local law enforcement officials close one lane of traffic on SR 80, as called for in the Evacuation Plan developed by the Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

“The Elementary Mathematics and Science Fair provides young learners with an opportunity to investigate the things they are curious about, design and execute their own experiments, practice how scientists and mathematicians do their work, and begin making choices about what they might want in their future,” said Thomas Medcalf, Elementary Science Resource Teacher and District Fair Coordinator.

Over 1,200 elementary students from across Palm Beach County visited the fair to view the projects and learn from them. They also had the chance to participate in a wide variety of interactive mathematics and science activities such as Mathematics and Science Jeopardy. Teachers from several elementary schools such as Addison Mizner and Rolling Green conducted hands-on activities with the participating students.

Wendy Spielman King, K-12 Science Manager for the School District of Palm Beach County, stated, “It is important that students acquire mathematical and scientific knowledge, but the application of this knowledge is the key to true understanding. The Elementary Mathematics and Science Fair challenges our students to use their knowledge and apply it to solve problems. That’s why this event is so important for student learning.”
